I'm a current high school senior from New York who has wanted to become a doctor since I was three years old. I have faced skepticism from people who do not believe people like me belong in medicine. For a while, I'll admit, I began to believe them.
In 10th grade, I found my way back to science. I joined a STEM pre-college program that reminded me why I wanted to be a doctor in the first place: work towards reducing racial disparities in healthcare. Since then, I've gone on to pursue research and other STEM opportunities with the resolve to make my dream a reality.
Currently, less than 6% of doctors in the United States are Black. Part of the reason this number is so low is due to various structural barriers. Many Black students are discouraged early, "counseled out" of challenging courses, or face financial barriers that make medicine harder to pursue. However, I know how powerful representation and mentorship can be in overcoming these challenges.
That's why I started BlackDocToBe.org. This project is about more than my own journey, it's about helping other Black students see that their journey is possible too.
